The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a mandatory recall order for all food products containing powdered kratom manufactured, processed, packed, or held by Triangle Pharmanaturals.
It is the first time the Agency has issued a mandatory recall for contaminated food products because a company has opted not to voluntarily recall after being notified by the FDA.
The recall is due to samples of the product testing positive for Salmonella. FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD, said the Company refused to take voluntary action, despite repeated requests and actions. “When we have a company like this one, which refuses to cooperate, is violating the law and is endangering consumers, we will pursue all avenues of enforcement under our authority,” said Dr. Gottlieb.
He also indicated that the Agency continues to have ‘serious concerns’ over the safety of any kratom-containing product, which is currently legal in the U.S.
Products that contain powdered kratom include, but are not limited to: Raw Form Organics Maeng Da Kratom Emerald Green, Raw Form Organics Maeng Da Kratom Ivory White, and Raw Form Organics Maeng Da Kratom Ruby Red. Any consumers in possession of these products should discard them, the Agency says.
The FDA is continuing to advise the public to avoid kratom-containing products, which are at the center of a current multi-state Salmonella outbreak.
