Even though Melatonin is commonly used as a sleeping pill -- it might serve another purpose. A new study revealed that Melatonin could alleviate pain symptoms resulting from fibromyalgia.
Researchers learned that high dose Melatonin taken regularly for six weeks probably reduces fibromyalgia pain. The report outlines an analysis of 63 women with fibromyalgia. The study's authors randomized patients to receive either 25 mgs of amitriptyline or 10 mgs of Melatonin or amitryptiline and melatonin together. Doses were given at bedtime.
The study's findings showed that patients in all three groups had less pain after six weeks than they did at baseline. Intensity was scored using a Visual Analogue Scale (zero means no pain and 100 means the worst possible pain).
In an analysis of the report, Richard N. Podell, MD, MPH, said it's fair to assume that Melatonin is likely to be a useful. "And because side effects from Melatonin are only rarely a problem, a trial of treatment with Melatonin with or without amitryptiline might be considered," he said.
He did point out, however, that most people typically don't use Melatonin the same way the study did. "So anyone using Melatonin to help fibromyalgia pain should be prepared to take it every night for six weeks before judging whether or not it helps," he said.
Melatonin is popularly used as a sleeping pill — although it likely helps only a small proportion of patients. Several double blind studies suggest that Melatonin might also help in combating fibromyalgia pain.
