Diabetes:

Indications for GLUCAGEN:

Severe hypoglycemic episodes in diabetics treated with insulin.

Adults and Children:

May give IV, IM, or SC. Hypoglycemia: <8yrs (<55 lbs): 0.5mg. >6yrs (>55 lbs): 1mg. Repeat if needed.

Contraindications:

Pheochromocytoma. Insulinoma.

Warnings/Precautions:

Instruct caregivers in proper use. If ineffective, give IV glucose. Give oral carbohydrates after treatment. Glucagonoma. Insufficient hepatic glycogen reserves (eg, prolonged fasting, starvation, adrenal insufficiency, chronic hypoglycemia). Necrolytic migratory erythema (w. continuous infusion). As a diagnostic aid (endoscopic, radiographic) in diabetes or elderly with cardiac disease. Pregnancy (Cat.B). Nursing mothers.

Pharmacologic Class:

Antihypoglycemic.

Interactions:

β-blockers potentiate cardiac effects. Potentiates anticholinergics.

Adverse Reactions:

GI upset, tachycardia, transient increase in blood pressure, allergic reactions.

Indications for GLUCAGEN:

For use during radiologic examinations to temporarily inhibit movement of the GI tract.

Adults and Children:

Usual dose to relax stomach, duodenal bulb, duodenum, small bowel: 0.2–0.5mg IV or 1mg IM. Usual dose to relax colon: 0.5–0.75mg IV or 1–2mg IM. After procedure, give oral carbohydrates to patients who have been fasting, if compatible.
